Undergraduate Program Faculty of Liberal Arts

8 Departments 2 Majors

The school year begins in April, and upon entering the University, all first-year students follow the Basic Program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts. In the Basic Program, all first-year students take General Subjects and some of the introductory courses in the Major Programs. During the second semester of the first year, majors are decided and students begin to study in their majors in the second year. In the Major Programs, students take mainly major course subjects, some courses in General Subjects, and related course subjects according to their major field of study.

The Basic Program provides students with a variety of courses, each designed to enable them to develop the study skills and intellectual approaches to research that will be necessary throughout their four years of college life.

General Subjects

Since its founding, the University has been dedicated to the education of women. The educational philosophy is based on Christian humanism and a thorough background in the liberal arts. Integration of various disciplines has been the primary element in achieving this educational goal.

Department of English Language, Communication and Cultures

The Department of English Language, Communication and Cultures encompasses five fields of studies, ‘English Linguistics and TESOL’, ‘English and American Literature’, ‘Media and Communication’, ‘English Communication Skills’ and ‘Cultural Perspectives of English’. Through research and education on diverse aspects of English in its manifestations and emergences in many cultures and societies of the world, we offer students a wide range of experiences in various English practices through which they are expected to acquire a sound knowledge and proficiency in the English language. Our aim is to nurture individuals with a positive and creative mind who can contribute to a global society.

Department of Japanese Language and Literature

Department of Japanese Language and Literature

The Department of Japanese Language and Literature conducts inquiries into the nature of the Japanese language, language teaching and literature, based on the understanding that language is the foundation of human cognition. We offer students educational opportunities to comprehend the diversity of the Japanese language, language teaching and literature, to think flexibly and acquire proficiency in communicating their ideas worldwide. We thus aim to nurture individuals who can fully contribute to society in various fields and find self-fulfillment in their lives.

Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy investigates the principle and structure of the world, nature, society and humanity, and fosters greater understanding of the four fundamental values of truth, goodness, beauty and the sacred through the examination of ideas from diverse times and regions, and philosophical dialogues with others. We aim to nurture individuals who are able to express their ideas logically, and, while interacting and cooperating with others, act on their initiative according to independent and comprehensive thinking when faced with various social issues.

Department of History

Department of History

The mission of the Department of History is to encourage each student to construct their own view of history. To this end, in their study of the history of humankind in Japan and other parts of the world, students are encouraged to identify their objectives, utilize their expertise to gather data and information for analysis, and subject them to careful examination. Through such practices, students learn to analyze and evaluate various contemporary events from a historical perspective and deal with them appropriately in modern society.

Department of Human Relations

The Department of Human Relations promotes interdisciplinary education and research on society and humanity at a time when modern society has reached a turning point owing to complex societal and human issues. We aim to nurture individuals who will recognize their goals and missions, and using flexible, multilateral perspectives and exercising their logical and analytical ability acquired through empirical study, communicate their own opinions, in order to pursue true values and contribute in building a society where people overcome conflicts or indifference to live together.

Department of International Studies

Department of International Studies

The Department of International Studies conducts comprehensive research on the impacts and issues caused by globalization from social and cultural perspectives. Students are expected to explore sociocultural phenomena in theory and practice through indepth study from various viewpoints. Our aim is to nurture individuals who, having acquired their own sense of values and understanding of diverse cultures, are able to respond appropriately to the changes of an international society by using their judgment and collaborative capacity, and contribute to international communication and cooperation.

Department of Education, Major in Education

The Department of Education (Major in Education) explores the field of pedagogy and related disciplines and promotes education and research to encourage students to acquire a fundamental understanding of character-building and pedagogic approaches as well as to view various issues of education and lifelong learning in the family, school and society from multilateral perspectives. We aim to nurture students who scrutinize issues in a rapidly globalizing and information- oriented society with a spirit of inquiry at all times, and by learning through practical experience and dialogue, act specifically towards solutions and become responsible members of a just and sustainable society.

Department of Education, Major in Primary Educations

The mission of the Department of Education (Major in Primary Education) is to foster sensitive, practical educators and care providers who have profound understanding of human beings and value the life and heart of each child. To achieve this end, students acquire fundamental knowledge and skills regarding theory and practice in education and primary education and also learn how to express the self and interact with others. Our aim is to nurture committed and compassionate individuals who are able to respond appropriately to pedagogic issues in today’s diversifying society.

Department of Psychology

Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology cultivates students’ abilities to scientifically explore and understand human psychology and behaviors based on specialized knowledge and empirical research methods in the fields of cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology and general knowledge of related areas. We aim to nurture individuals who are able to view various psychological problems from multilateral perspectives and apply analytical and flexible thought to contribute autonomously to a diverse and information-oriented modern society.

Minors

Besides the Major Programs, second-year students may optionally start their tree-year enrollment in a Minor Program of their choice. All departments offer Minor Programs in their fields of study. There is also an interdisciplinary Minor Program in Liberal Arts.
